If you are injured at work, be sure to notify your employer immediately. Your employer is responsible for reporting your injury to Summit as soon as possible. If your injury has not been reported, you can contact us directly at 1-800-762-7811.

Summit has a dedicated team, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to take the injury report over the phone. Our claims professionals are involved immediately to help you through the process.

The Claims Process

We understand that a workplace injury can be a confusing experience. We’re here to make it as smooth as possible for you.

After a claim is reported by your employer, you will be assigned: 1) a claim number, and 2) an adjuster who will help with questions about what you should expect from the workers’ compensation process. Your adjuster will explain how to access medical care and coordinate your return to work with your physician and your employer. You will also receive a packet of materials for your review, along with forms to complete and return.

Our goal is to help you recover quickly, return to work, and resume your normal lifestyle. Remember that it’s important that you contact your employer after each visit with your physician, and keep the following points in mind during the process:

  • You should discuss your work status and physical restrictions with your employer. (For example, your doctor may limit lifting or bending). This allows your employer to adjust your job appropriately or offer temporary work in a different job.
  • Any job modifications are intended to be temporary until you can work in your full capacity or in a regular position.
  • If you return to work and then begin losing time from work again as a result of this injury, please contact your adjuster.

Your adjuster will also explain wage benefits and how they are paid.

People You May Meet in the Process

Claims Adjusters

When your injury is reported to Summit, your case is assigned to a claims adjuster. This person is your primary contact with Summit and will help you schedule medical appointments, communicate with your employer during your recovery, and return to work.

If your injury requires a prolonged healing process, your case may be reassigned to a different adjuster. This is because Summit adjusters are specially trained for particular types of claims. Some deal with short-term injuries that do not require more than a week away from work, called medical-only claims. These make up the vast majority of claims that Summit manages.

Other adjusters manage claims that involve wage benefits as well as medical care.

In cases of a permanent injury, loss of a limb, or a death, a specialized team of our most experienced adjusters are trained to handle the emotional and financial issues that surround these types of claims.

Field Adjusters

One of our field adjusters may visit your workplace to find out what caused your injury, to inspect any equipment involved in the injury or to gather further information from you and your employer.

Nurse Case Managers

Summit has nurses on staff to oversee your medical treatment, help answer questions and lend their medical knowledge to your adjuster as needed.

Expenses

Medical care related to your on-the-job injury will be provided at no cost to you. This could include approved surgical, hospital, and dental care, prescriptions and medical supplies (through in-network medical providers).

Summit (or one of our managed companies) will pay bills for approved services, and you will never have to pay a deductible. If you receive a bill for approved services related to your workers’ comp claim, do not pay it. Instead, please call the Summit Claims department or mail the bill to the following address:

If your reported claim involves a potential blood-borne pathogen exposure, such as a needle stick, and you have any questions, please call 1-800-282-7644 and ask to speak with a nurse case manager.
