OSHA has issued a final rule* to update the general industry standards for Walking-Working Surfaces and Personal Fall Protection Systems. The rule is intended to protect workers by updating and clarifying standards, and adding training and inspection requirements. The update affects general industry standards but does not apply to agricultural standards.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transportation incidents and workers being struck by vehicles or mobile equipment made up the highest number of fatal work injuries nationwide in 2015.(1) Workers in construction, utility operations and emergency response are among those particularly at risk for fatal work injuries.(2)

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, about 2,000 U.S. workers per day sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment. The majority of eye injuries are caused by foreign objects scraping or striking the eye, but many other dangers may exist in your workplace.

12.02.2016OSHA’s New Requirements for Electronic Submission of Injury and Illness Data

Effective January 1, 2017, OSHA has revised its Recording and Reporting Occupational Injuries and Illnesses regulation. The rule will now require employers in certain industries to electronically submit worker injury and illness data that they are already required to record on the OSHA Summary of Work-Related Injuries and illnesses (Form 300A). The data submitted electronically will be determined based on the industry and number of employees of a business. The new reporting requirements will be phased in over two years.

Employees who work in confined spaces, such as manholes, crawl spaces and tanks, are subject to additional hazards that include asphyxiation, explosions, electrocutions and exposure to toxic substances. OSHA’s new standard further protects these workers by requiring permits and emphasizing training, continuous worksite evaluations and communications.
